Summer Under the Ensign of the Sea Cadet

Active Family Sailing Holidays Are Gaining Popularity

Remember reading Greenland or Scarlet Sails as children, swept away alongside Aysel and Grey on a maritime voyage? It was hard to believe in such fairytales, let alone dream of journeying on a real vessel. For today’s children, it is a reality. More and more families are choosing hands-on yachting with their kids over standard package holidays. After all, it offers far more than a suntan and coastal views—it is a genuine adventure with real educational depth.

What Is Youth Sailing, and Where Does Education Come In?

A yachting trip with a dedicated children’s program brings pure joy to a child’s eyes. While living in real cabins onboard a sailing yacht, kids take the helm, learn teamwork, master nautical terminology, and try on every role on the ship’s manifest. If your own school astronomy lessons are a distant memory, join the kids as they spot constellations and learn to read weather phenomena. Days are filled with swimming and beach picnics on uninhabited islands; evenings feature open-air movie screenings right on deck.

“I can barely keep track of my child on dry land, let alone on a boat…” you might think. But you would be mistaken. Dedicated animators and youth counselors work alongside young sailors in youth regattas, keeping children engaged at all times through a meticulously planned schedule. Kids paint, fly kites, play games, and draw adults into their adventures. Parents have a choice: take time for themselves while the children are engaged, or dive into the program alongside them. Rejoining the fun is certainly merrier for the whole crew, but we fully understand that moms and dads need a break, too!

How Is the Activity Program Structured?

A youth regatta is built around a carefully designed, vibrant program tailored to different age groups. Because children are naturally energetic and require varied engagement, educational modules alternate with entertainment. During voyages with the Young Mariners Academy—which has been organizing summer youth programs during school holidays for five years—children take part in a full-fledged maritime quest. From day one, they step into an immersive storyline: hunting for treasure, deciphering secrets from a Magic Book, overcoming Fort Boyard-style obstacles, solving logic puzzles, and developing creative, leadership, and team skills. The program evolves each year to keep every journey unique. The most common question kids ask at the end of a trip is simply: “When are we setting sail again?”

Onboard Life & Accommodation

Children and adults stay in cozy cabins right on the yacht, which is part of the charm. What does each cabin include? Twin berths (with plenty of space), compact storage lockers, and a porthole. Across 5 cabins, there are typically 3 heads (bathrooms) with hot showers and toilets. Meals are prepared onboard by the crew, using fresh local produce purchased at nearby markets and shops based on a shared menu. Onboard dining often proves richer and more varied than typical hotel buffets, as the collaborative atmosphere makes cooking enjoyable. Kids can also pitch in with simple galley duties, creating a wonderful family team-building experience.

What Is the Best Age for Youth Sailing?

Programs are generally designed for children aged 6 to 12, though exceptions are often made depending on the child’s independence. Modern organization makes it possible to welcome even younger travelers on board; when family groups register, dedicated yachts with attentive hostesses are deployed to assist parents with daily tasks and meal prep.

Family sailing trips are among the most emotionally rewarding ways to travel, offering something special for every generation. If you haven’t experienced it yet, you are missing out on a truly remarkable voyage. It’s time to set sail!
