Well, we’re back from our sailing expedition to Scotland. Time to report back!
- There really are more sheep than people in Scotland.
- It truly is windy, damp, and rainy there, but when the sun comes out, the beauty is extraordinary with so many rainbows.
- Distilleries are at every turn. But it feels more like entertainment for tourists than a lucrative venture for local business owners.
- The Crinan Canal is a must-have for any sailor. Important note: you need a crew of at least 4 people—ideally 6-7—because 13 out of the 15 locks have to be opened and closed manually. Plan for about 20-25 minutes per lock.
- Scots are a grim and reserved people—false. They are very friendly, open, and communicative.
- The Loch Ness Monster—still no one has seen it for sure, but the legends live on 🙂
- Listened to the bagpipes. A questionable pleasure, to be honest.
- Men in kilts do exist. But only for special occasions.
- Marinas on the islands are solid. Everything is clean, civilized, and well-equipped.
- Yachting in northern destinations—great for experienced sailors, interesting for beginners, with plenty to keep advanced sailors entertained.
Recommendation—definitely go.
As for us, we’re already packing our bags for the next expeditions. In the new year, we’re heading to Mexico, French Polynesia, Iceland, and the Lofoten Islands. Join us 🙂 no experience required.
